ACT NOW -- Restore Voting Rights for People in NJ on Parole and Probation
The League of Women Voters of NJ has been fighting to restore voting rights for people on parole and probation in our state for a decade. Over 80,000 New Jersey residents on parole or probation are currently denied the right to vote. We have an opportunity to finally correct this injustice during this "lame duck" session - but we need you with us! Please urge our Legislators to pass A5823/S4260.
There is no evidence that denying the right to vote serves any legitimate public safety or criminal justice goal. In fact, voting can reduce recidivism and help with re-entry because it helps people feel more connected to their communities and its issues.
New Jersey is falling behind. No other state in the Northeast denies voting rights to as many people living in the community as New Jersey does.
